Do Crib Mattresses Really Work?

After researching crib mattresses, I was surprised that parents still have different views about them.

Most parents would buy crib mattresses to give their babies a comfortable place to sleep. To be honest, this used to be my primary reason for wanting a crib mattress.

But my search leads me to more discoveries about why parents should never skimp on baby mattresses.

What Does the Research Say?

Research suggests that the best crib mattresses lowers the risk of babies suffering from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

SIDS is one of the common causes of unexpected death among infants under one year old. Most of the time, the deaths occur while the baby is asleep or inside their sleeping area.

As a result, studies show that SIDS could be caused by conditions while the baby is sleeping. One of the suggestions made by many researchers is to use FIRM mattresses instead of soft ones.

Firm mattresses will less likely suffocate your baby. Your baby’s face won’t sink into the foam — which can happen when the mattress is too soft.

What Do the Experts Say?

Experts have contradicting views on this issue. Some find crib mattresses to be essential for the baby’s comfort. At the same time, it helps promote good posture at an early age.

More importantly, babies are less likely to suffer from SIDS. Nevertheless, other experts claim that breathable mattresses have no effect at all.

Because of these conflicting views, I would rather stay safe and invest in a good crib mattress. Knowing my baby is safe even while sleeping will give me peace of mind.

What Do the Critics Say?

Some parent critics suggest looking for firm and reliable crib mattresses. Although this is contrary to the view of some experts, at least you’re taking the safe and cautious side.

Because of this, many critics evaluate crib mattresses based on their foam density and the material used. In general, the denser and firmer it is, the better

Factors to Consider When Buying the Best Breathable Crib Mattress

Factors to Consider When Buying the Best Breathable Crib Mattress

When finding the best breathable crib mattresses, there are a few essential considerations I had to keep in mind. This helped me choose the best products for me and my baby! More importantly, it helped me narrow my search.

1. Mattress Size

First and foremost, make sure to select the right crib mattress size

It shouldn’t be too small on the crib, or your baby could fall off the edges of the mattress. At the same time, it shouldn’t be too big, or else it won’t fit the crib at all.

I highly recommend measuring your baby’s crib first before buying a mattress. Most cribs come in a standard size, so finding the perfect one won’t be hard.

You can also DIY your baby’s crib, especially if you’re eyeing a bigger or smaller mattress than normal. Add some crib skirts on the bottom to spruce up your DIY crib.

2. Mattress Material

Mattress material must meet the HONK criteriaHypoallergenic, Organic, Natural, and Kid friendly.

On the outset, make sure the mattress is made of natural materials. It shouldn’t be made with too many harsh chemicals that could expose your baby to carcinogens.

At the same time, the material should also be hypoallergenic and kid-friendly. You don’t want your baby to suffer from allergies because of the fabric used on the mattress.

3. Bed Composition

Crib mattresses are often composed of few materials only.

At most, the center of the mattress sports durable springs that can give your baby good back support. However, others don’t have springs at all

Personally, I would prefer mattresses with springs. They’re a lot firmer to touch and much safer for kids to sleep in. They’ll less likely suffer from SIDS with these types of mattresses.

Nonetheless, several foam mattresses provide good support and a firm base. Just be sure to test the mattress or read reviews about its density and firmness.

4. Extra Accessories

In general, crib mattresses don’t really come with any extra accessories. At most, you only get an extra cover to keep the surface clean.

However, covers or crib sheets are already great since that’s one less thing to buy!

Most mattresses even have some pillows, making their product a good choice. That said, look at all your options and choose which offers a good deal.

5. Cost

Crib mattresses typically range from Php 500 to at least Php 4,000.

As such, set a budget for yourself and how much you’re willing to spend on a crib mattress.

Just to help manage your expectations, crib mattresses tend to be expensive, especially branded ones. Nonetheless, several affordable options deliver the same quality and performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve read so much about breathable crib mattresses, and I noticed how some parents had a lot of questions about certain topics.

I decided to put some of these questions here and share the answers with you! I’m sure it’ll help you understand crib mattresses better and how to use them.

What Are the Different Types of Mattresses?

What Are the Different Types of Mattresses?

There are three mattresses: innerspring, foam, and hybrid. Each has its own pros and cons, which make them the perfect fit for the right parents.

Let me discuss each of them and why they make a good choice:

Innerspring Mattresses

As its name suggests, this type of mattress has a steel spring inside the mattress. This is perfect for a firmer and bouncier mattress because the coils provide good support.

I highly recommend innerspring mattresses for babies who are stomach sleepers. Firm mattresses will be a good pick because it reduces the chances of suffering SIDS.

Foam Mattresses

Foam mattresses help realign your body, from the neck to your hip.

They provide good weight distribution, which is perfect for helping babies with their posture. More importantly, its soft texture helps reduce any pressure points on your baby.

The downside with foam mattresses is some babies might be allergic to them. Some contain allergens that could irritate your baby’s skin or lungs.

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses combine the design of the softness of foam and firmness of innerspring mattresses. They provide good back support and temperature regulation, giving your baby a comfortable sleep.

However, I did notice that hybrid mattresses tend to be pricey. Nevertheless, they’re a worthy investment for long term use.

How Often Do You Need to Replace a Crib Mattress?

Crib mattresses need to be replaced at least every five years. Other brands claim to last longer than that, but five years would be a good baseline for any mattress.

Remember that it could be shorter than 5 years, especially if the mattress is already too worn out to be used. Examples would be the following:

  • Innersprings are broken or have pierced the mattress surface
  • The foam had already lost its original shape
  • There are stubborn stains that can no longer be removed
  • Mold has started to develop on random parts of the bed

Once you notice these signs, I highly recommend you replace the crib mattress immediately. While at it, you can even spruce the crib by painting it with fresh colors!

Having a good night’s sleep is one of the most important things every baby needs. It’s crucial to their development, especially in terms of cognitive and physical growth.

Investing in the best cribs and good crib mattresses will help your baby have a restful sleep each night. Watch out for their baby’s sleep cues and prepare them for bed.

Together, let’s provide our babies with everything they need to grow into their best selves.

Josie Mariano

Hello, my name is Josie Mariano, and I’m proud to say I’m a soon-to-be mom.
Although my partner and I are still waiting for our firstborn to arrive, we’re already doing whatever it takes to prepare for our baby’s needs.
I’ve been joining a lot of parenting forums and asking my doctors for advice on how to prepare for my baby. They’ve all been very informative and I was able to spot the areas I still need to work on.
At the same time, I also rely on my mom for tips on what to do during my pregnancy journey.
With everything that I’ve learned so far, I’d like to share these experiences to fellow parents and soon-to-be parents!
